Review: Kjallarinn Restaurant
There are so many great restaurants in Reykjavik so when I had to choose one for Valentine’s Day, I had plenty of options. TripAdvisor is a great place to start, but I always recommend talking to the locals first, if possible. I had heard good things about Kjallarinn (“The Cellar”) Restaurant, located at the heart of Reykjavik (Aðalstræti 2 – The same building as the tourist information center), so I decided to give it a shot.
This restaurant is literally at the center of Reykjavík, so it’s perfect for anybody who wants to spend some time downtown. It can be a little tricky to find, since it’s located in a cellar/basement (hence the name), right underneath a different restaurant called Geysir Bistro. But this gives it a little bit of an “exclusivity” feel and the ambiance and decor is very nice.
Like so many other Icelandic restaurants, the prices are pretty high. Most of the time, the food lives up to the high price and is worth it, and this was not an exception. Even though I have had better food in other restaurants, the quality of all the dishes we ordered was excellent. Of course we liked the desert the best and I would definitely recommend the creme bruleé!
Even though there were a couple of things that could have been better, the overall experience was good. By sharing an appetizer and desert, ordering some of the more expensive main dishes, but skipping wine/cocktails, the bill came out to be Kr. 16.000,- ($120) for two people. I know that sounds pretty steep, but it really is quite normal for a restaurant of this quality.
Kjallarinn has a lot of competition from great restaurants in the downtown area, but I would still happily recommend this restaurants to friends.
